WHAT’S NEW AT THE REFUGE

By Erica Ryder, Visitor Services Specialist

The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge welcomes our new Refuge Manager, Megan Reed. Megan started her position at Back Bay NWR in mid-October and comes to us by way of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Regional Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Megan is excited to be back at a field station, and she is thrilled to join the team here at Back Bay NWR.

In April, the Blue Goose Wildlife Tram tours will begin operating Fridays through Sundays, leaving at 9:00 a.m. and returning at 1:00 p.m. Reservations will be taken through False Cape State Park. All interested parties can call the state park at (757)426-7128.

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge will participate in the City Nature Challenge for the second year in a row. This event is a worldwide citizen-led BioBlitz, where people record wildlife and plant observations on iNaturalist. We have worked with partners, including the Virginia Aquarium, Mariner’s Museum and Virginia Zoo, to create a team for the Hampton Roads area. All observations added to iNaturalist from April 29 through May 2 will count for our region’s total! Please check the refuge’s website and Facebook page for events related to this project.
